Once upon a time, there was a man.
One unexpected day, he learned he had cancer.
All at once, he felt overwhelmed,
lonely,
frightened.
And then his daughter asked him, "Dad, how do you eat an elephant?"
The man had no idea, so he asked, "How do I eat an elephant?"
To which she replied, "One bite at a time. Dad, this cancer is like an elephant. We're going to focus on beating it only one minute... one moment... one bite at a time.
...And you'll never be alone."
The next day, she brought him a small toy elephant. He named it "Radar."
Radar became his dearest friend.
And every minute... every moment... he was not alone.
The One Bite at a Time Organization was started by the family of this man because they saw how much even just a little support, of knowing that someone always cares, meant to him.
And so, they started giving small toy elephants to those facing the frightening task of fighting cancer. To let them know that this task is not to be eaten whole. To let them know that they're not alone. That someone is always on their side, cheering them on, caring about them, supporting them. Every day... every minute... every moment... of time.
The One Bite at a Time Organization was started in memory of Jack I. Shutts, Jr. ... beloved husband, father, mentor and friend.
